The LGBTQIA+ Centre is a pioneering initiative in India. The brief was to create a multi-functional and multipurpose community space that could support diverse activities such as community gatherings, screenings, book readings, performances and discussions under one roof while simultaneously offering free counselling and medical advice to queer individuals and their families.
The facility is managed by a director with a scheduled calendar of events, it welcomes the entire community and boasts multifunctionality. Keeping in mind the versatility and adaptability that was necessary for the centre to operate to its full potential, a carefully curated material palette was paired with intentionally chosen design elements that together set the stage for unfolding of the exciting events and activities planned for this one-of-a-kind community institution. The space features a soft grey neutral palette, allowing diverse art forms to shine – the centre was intended to be used as art gallery, displaying works by queer artistes that are meant to be rotated periodically. The walls are finished in durable lime plaster, while the floor boasts a resilient industrial grade flooring material. Light-toned timber furniture and ceiling slats lend the space an international yet rooted feel.
The main hall itself is versatile, with adaptable furniture that facilitates various arrangements for events such as book launches, group discussions, film screenings, performances, and more. Iconic phrases from queer history are placed on the ceiling – as a constant reminder of the ideas that have guided the queer rights movement across the world. A small reading nook, in the form of a free standing bookcase and high tables, acts as a repository of books on queer literature and history that provide easy access to anyone who is interested in delving into those aspects of the queer movement.
