The project site is located one block off Gaien-Nishi Street, at the threshold between commercial and residential zones. Historically known as Kōgaichō, the area flourished as a samurai residential district in the Edo period. In recent years, it has come to be known as “Bistro Street,” characterized by an intimate alley-like environment where hidden restaurants and housing are interwoven. This project proposes a mixed-use building composed of dining, retail, and residential functions that carries forward this layered urban context.

The architectural composition emphasizes continuity with the surrounding neighborhood through a series of horizontally expressed, stacked volumes. By inserting a three-dimensional passage space that draws the fine-grained alley scale into the interior, the design creates a spatial experience in which the streetscape and the building are perceived as continuous.

The external spaces generated by the shifted stacked volumes unfold as covered entrance areas and L-shaped open balconies, forming a rich semi-outdoor domain. These layered threshold spaces allow signs of human activity and presence to be perceived through the façade. The exterior is finished with tiles featuring a bold, speckled, irregular pattern, giving the building a textured and expressive appearance reminiscent of natural stone. Through a unified design language based on a single material palette and strong horizontal articulation, the project seeks to maintain overall coherence while accommodating diverse programs and patterns of inhabitation within a flexible architectural framework.

計画地は、外苑西通りから一本入った、商業用途と住宅用途の境界に位置している。江戸時代には笄町と呼ばれ武家地として栄え、近年では「ビストロ通り」として、隠れ家のような飲食店と住宅が混在する魅力的な路地環境を形成してきた。本計画は、この多層的な都市文脈を継承する場所に、飲食・物販・住宅からなる複合施設を計画した。

建築は、周辺環境との連続性を意識し、水平性を強調した複数のボリュームを積層する構成とした。路地的スケールを建築内部へ引き込むように立体的なパサージュ空間を挿入することで、街並みと建築が連続する空間体験を生み出している。

積層ボリュームのずれによって生まれる外部空間は、アプローチの軒下空間やL型の開放的なバルコニーとして展開され、豊かな半屋外領域を形成する。そこに現れる人々の気配や活動がファサード越しに感じられる構成とした。外装には、大胆な斑点によるランダムな表情をもつタイルを採用し、天然石のような質感と奥行きをもつ外観を与えている。同一素材と水平性を基調としたデザイン言語によって全体の統一感を保ちながら、多様な用途と人々の営みを受け止める柔軟な建築を目指した。
