Transformation House: Adapting to Gurugram’s Evolving Urban Fabric
Gurugram’s urban landscape is rapidly transforming from its “Garden City” origins to a denser model, driven by speculative development and new zoning laws. This shift, exemplified by the proliferation of multi-story buildings, is creating an alienating environment.
Facing a looming 50-foot blank wall from a new neighboring construction, clients sought a solution to preserve their two-decade-old home and its outward views.
Instead of demolition, the architects undertook a profound transformation, converting the existing house into an inward-looking courtyard home. This reorientation, centered around an old ‘Champa’ tree, created a stepped courtyard with gardens and terraces.
The design strategically integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing occupants to adapt to seasonal changes – utilizing cool ground floor verandahs in summer and sunny upper-level lounges in winter.
This adaptive reuse not only maintained the home’s value but also championed environmental conservation by minimizing construction waste and integrating sustainable systems. The project demonstrates a harmonious balance between preserving architectural heritage and adapting to the pressures of urban growth.
