In Nanokamachi, Yamagata City, this project proposes an alternative to the conventional road-widening approach that typically transforms and homogenizes the streetscape. Instead of simple roadway expansion, it introduces a method that simultaneously widens streets and redistributes land parcels, enabling block improvement and urban reconfiguration while retaining the existing character and local appeal of the district.
By establishing a network of small paths and lanes with intentionally blurred boundaries between public and private realms, the plan enhances walkability and circulation while fostering the growth of sustainable, community-based activities along these routes. Through this strategy, the project explores new possibilities for a walkable city rooted in incremental spatial restructuring rather than wholesale replacement.
